Road Trip!

We don't always take planes to scenic locations out here.  Actually, the other half had to work yesterday, so ride along as I show you what a friend and I did all day yesterday.

Yep!  This is a good sign at the beginning of the trip!  We didn't take my Civic, FYI.  Our destination was the final one listed on the sign.  We had printed out directions as this old mostly abandoned town is not a location Garmin included and we were nearly out of cell phone range at this point.  We knew it was about 2 hours each way from my house.

This was a FUN road to drive.  It is not a straight shot, and I recommend following the speed limit signs. (We were about 5 MPH under to hopefully avoid any flats.)  This road is mostly gravel and has lots of narrow twists and turns and big rocks and deep spots where water has run off...in the middle of the road. And lots of trucks pulling trailers with ATVs. (See note above in sign about trucks with trailers...)

About 5 minutes before this sign though, we decided a potty break would be nice.  Not pictured below: the vault potty that appeared like a shining beacon just when we saw this sign.

We had been 90% sure we'd taken a correct turn at one point.  This sign was a nice reassurance that we had.  We had also gotten a little nutty by now.  We turned our drive into a "Bear Hunt."  Anyone know the book?  The general idea is taken from a book we had used in the camping unit at work last month.

We're goin' on a bear hunt.  We're gonna catch a big one.  We're not scared! Oh no!  Big round bouldery rocks! Can't go around it, can't go under it, we're gonna have to go over it.  Ka-flump!

Prior to the vault potty mentioned above, the verse had been...We're goin' on a bear hunt.  We're gonna catch a big one.  We're not scared!  Oh no!  Big full bladders!  Can't take care of it, we're gonna have to endure it!  Trickle, trickle...drip!  (It was funny enough at this point that we were giggling incessantly, which is not in fact a good thing with the aforementioned full bladder.)  It wasn't that we didn't want to stop somewhere and find a nice lush tree, it was a matter of a narrow road without an option for a spot to pull off!

All better and with a renewed sense of focus after stopping by the shining beacon, we continued on.  Time for pretty flowers along the way.

A couple of these are from along the path to and through the cemetery.

Silver City is primarily an abandoned old mining town.  All of the buildings are privately owned and you can't go into them, except for the hotel (which serves food and has the only air-conditioned potty in town for paying customers only), Pat's What Not Shop, and the Silver City Fire and Rescue store.  Pat's sells local souvenirs and rock and mineral samples. Fire and Rescue sells artifacts from the buildings. The hotel sells lunch and pie.  Here's the town's link...  http://www.historicsilvercityidaho.com/

Most of the town is best accessed by ATV, so we did a lot of walking around.  Oh, and most of the main street was closed due to a horseshoe contest.

My friend walking back down from the church.  It was getting toasty and I opted out of the stairs on this one.  I helped an older couple take a photo with Silver City in the background while she was up there though.  They were grateful they didn't have another attempted self-portrait photo... We've all been there!

We agreed that the drive was worth it for the pie at the hotel.  FYI, one of the locals tells us that the pie comes out around 4pm on Fridays.  Apparently you need to be there early on Saturday if you want any.  A non-inclusive list: rhubarb, strawberry rhubarb, raspberry rhubarb, apple, dutch apple, coconut cream, and several more!

The view on the drive back.

It was a fun little drive.  And really?  I live near this kind of place?  I love it.  I'm sure my other half will enjoy this road on his motorcycle on a day when he's not working, so I don't feel too bad about not bringing pie back for him.  Truth be told, the road was bumpy enough, I'm not sure it would have resembled pie by the time we arrived home.

Now back to planning our next trip.  Hint: We're leaving the state and not headed east....
